The project:
Vermont is an exclusive, heritage listed four story residence in the heart of The Rocks in Sydney. Constructed in the 1890’s, the building is a noteworthy example of early Queen Anne style Federation architecture with period features throughout, polychromatic brickwork and a colonial sandstone courtyard. The brief was to bring the property into the modern age, suitable for a family of four while respectfully maintaining and restoring the heritage features of the house.

The multi award winning design by Studio Duo used a colour palette inspired by the character of the local area – sandstone, the water of wharves and coppery tones of chimney pots are all used as inspiration against a neutral backdrop with plenty of natural materials. Detailed custom joinery, bespoke furniture and commissioned artworks can be found throughout the property.

All detail throughout the home had to be designed and crafted with respect to the heritage of the house while allowing for modern conveniences such as mechanical ventilation, air conditioning and home automation. For example the old disused wash house – once part of an extended yard used for sanitation laneways during the plague – was carefully restored and reconfigured into a laundry and bathroom with covered access from the house.

Perfect for a heritage project of this nature, Expella’s Shadowline Diffuser Pro sensitively integrates into the three bathrooms in the house. The product creates a barely visible vent for the ducted inline ventilation system ensuring that function does not come at the expense of the historic architectural features and beautiful finishes. Expella’s EMF inline fans extract damp air quietly and efficiently – a modern necessity to ensure a healthy building that stands for many more centuries to come.
