What is an odourless toilet and how does it work?

A Milu Odourless toilet looks and functions like any other toilet, however what separates these toilets from others on the market is the patented and award winning Odour Control Device (OCD) hidden inside the cistern. This in-built ventilation system quietly and discreetly extracts odours from the toilet bowl and discharges them into the sewer, preventing unpleasant toilet smells from entering the bathroom and spreading to other parts of the home. Expella’s patented¹ Odour Control Device (OCD) is hidden inside the cistern, it is activated by either a:
– Light switch²
– Manual switch²
– Automatic sensor switch.²
The OCD contains an in-built extraction fan that draws odours from the bowl through the exhaust system.
Odours pass through the OCD, opening a non return valve that prevents odours returning.
Odours are discharged to the sewer.

Developing the Milu Odourless toilet

Expella has been evolving its odourless toilet design for over 14 years, drawing on years of specialised experience in bathroom ventilation systems. The breakthrough for Expella came with the development of the patented Odour Control Device (OCD), currently used in the Milu Odourless toilet.

The first of its kind anywhere in the world, Expella’s OCD quietly extracts odours from the toilet bowl and discharges them directly into the sewer before they can be released into the bathroom. The OCD sits discreetly in the cistern, and features across Milu Odourless’ contemporary range of toilets.

Milu Odourless has undergone extensive research and testing by a range of independent experts and assessors, including The University of New South Wales’ Hydraulics Lab and Odour Emissions Lab, who assessed the device as being up to 99.7% effective at removing odours. Milu Odourless was also shortlisted as Best New Product at the Sydney HIA Home Show in 2018.

The team at Expella have worked hard to ensure Milu Odourless complies with strict Australian standards, gaining approval from Standards Australia and recognised by The Plumbing Code of Australia.
